Using Word Processor can be very useful in Costa Rican classrooms if teachers know how to take advantage of it. Even though the video is based on how to use Word Processor tools in written documents; it has to be clear at this point that Word Processor can be also used to create a Web page by using the same practical tools. As it is stated in the reading Creating a Web Page, “You can use all Word’s formatting commands to create your Web page. You can format fonts, paragraphs, insert graphics, tables, whatever” (page 340). So, by using Word Processor we can create Web pages to develop some units of the English curriculum in a creative and practical way, and by doing that students will feel motivated and encouraged to learn English. As a teacher I have not used Word Processor in my classes, but in the future I will use it, a couple of examples of how I will use it are: • Creating a Web Page about any topic, for instance: a Web page about Holidays and Celebrations with hyperlinks to different English speaking countries and its corresponding holidays or celebrations, including also important aspects that must be taken into account for each celebration. • Also, when studying physical appearance I will create a Web page using Word Processor to illustrate the vocabulary of the topic, and also some hyperlinks which guide students to different videos of how to use the vocabulary in real scenarios.
Nowadays people are very used to the implementation of technology to make everyday life easier, why don’t use those tools to make learning experience easier and more attractive? One example is the use of what looks like a “simple” tool as word processor which can be transform into something more attractive in the teaching of English as a second language. This can be done through the use of pictures, colors to capture student’s attention and hyperlinks to go form one page to another; this can lead to the creation of web pages using word processors! It’s not a surprise that our students expect from us a more dynamic atmosphere in our classrooms, they don’t pretend to live a life of innovations in their homes and outside the school and time travel back to the past when they enter the classroom. We need to keep up with their necessaries; that is why knowing how to handle technological devises and programs like in this case word processor is so important. In my personal experience to be honest there are a lot of features of word processor that I had never used before, because I never thought it was necessary, but now I can see a clear relationship between discovering technology and applications in teaching. It is just as stated by Joy Egbert, “as technology access improves around the world, teachers owe it to their students to explore the tools and resources it provides” (8).
