This video is very funny; I enjoyed it a lot because it has nothing to do with the formal and customary manner in which knowledge is transmitted in English classrooms. I want to learn how to do something like this since it seems to be a very good tool to provide extra material to students to grab their attention. They can be used to provide wonderful warm ups because of their attractiveness and simplicity. Also, the amount of possibilities that sources like this provide is endless and could be adjustable to the students’ needs. Students and teachers would learn a big deal by producing simple videos like this.
According to the reading “Web Pages in Service of L2 Learning”, Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) is a useful tool for teaching and learning a foreign language using technological materials such as web pages, CD-ROMs, DVDs, and computer- meditated activities such as chat (p. 65). Undoubtedly, the use of a program like CALL in the classroom make the process of teaching-learning more interesting for both, teachers and students, since they can be immersed in real world activities. Besides, as is mentioned in the video, CALL has been created for promoting human´s motivation by personalizing their information and increasing their motivation. As a teacher, I might use CALL to create a computer game based on a topic students are covering in class, I did it before and it worked because children and teenager love computers as well as games, so using computer games is a fun way to practice any topic. Another example of how I would use CALL as a teacher is to use web pages because they give information and interactive practice about the topic; a topic such as the simple past tense can be done by completing sentences and relating pictures with the verb.
This video provides a very simple and accurate description of what CALL is all about. It is the best tool to encourage learners to be in total control of their learning process, but as it is said in the video it is not just a tool per se. There are multiple ways of implementing these types of technologies in classrooms for practicing and also outside the classroom as homework assignments. And also there is a vast amount of materials such as videos, audios, etc. that can be used to get students into learning at their own pace. Teachers are no longer the central piece of the language learning process as many used to think. In fact, students have always been the cornerstone and now they are able to do it by using technology in order to improve their linguistic skills.
CALL, as it is mentioned in the video, is more than just a tool. It is a program developed for teaching and learning which has evolved as the technology advances. I think the creation of this program shows us the creativity and adaptability of teachers to implement new equipment in classrooms. Nowadays, more and more people, from earlier ages, are getting familiar with new technology. Technology is very popular and people love to interact through them. Some examples of successful high-tech are facebook, the ipod, and cellphones). Then, CALL provides new opportunities for teaching since it “[…] act as real tutor or guardian for L2 students, learning them […] to discover more and more about the target language […] ” (p. 61 in CALL and Its Evaluation). In other words, it helps teacher in tutoring students. In my own professional experience, I have used the basic CALL program for grammar and sentence structure with my students. This program has been provided by the academy in the computer lab. I have seen that students are more concentrated in the exercises of the computer than in one handout. It seems to me that being the program more interactive than a handout, besides of the visual attractiveness that presented in the screen. So that, I agree with the author and the video when they say that CALL fosters students’ motivation and personalized their information through feedback.
The use of CALL has become a very important tool in language instruction. As cited in chapter 2, page 20 (Theory and Research:Interaction via Computers) " The use of computers and the Internet in language learning not only supports the development of students´language skills but also fosters students´interests and motivation".In my personal experience I´ve noticed the level of anxiety and curiosity students show everytime the class is developed supported by any type of technological tool.Besides chapter 2, page 21 adds " Merging social and language learning with technology can also strengthen skilla that students need to be successful in society. Therefore implementing CALL in our teaching experience contributes to build a better understanding of the language since students internalize better the information and show more emphaty with technological sources than with the traditional methodologies.Besides we contribute to to build social and cultural interaction among our students.
We DO NEED assitance and support when performing succesfuly and accurately as teachers. Each student presents different ways of learning, consequently teachers should focus and attend the multiple necessities students have. According to the reading: CALL and its Evaluation, (pag 60), the program provides special attention to students when encouraging their abilities, trough which knowledge and competence could be reinforced, as well as their production. In my experience as a teacher I was able to prove that using and applying technological devices in my classrooms activities caused a positive effect on sudents, and so were the activities in which they were able to show their imagination and useful ideas. I`m doing a little reseach on how blogs facilitate some processes (for example: writing) when students are learning a second language. It seems that according to what I have read, strategies such as creating a blog for students to participate in a different way, has had a major and positive impact on students` performance. I consider Blogs as an example of great tool that teacher may employ for second language instruction.
A very simple way to say that the use of assited computers is such a thing that comes from other world. And some professors feel like if they where talking in other languges when they try the word technology or computers. However, it is simple to define that sometimes it our fears that makes teachers feel like this funny robot...lost! But, theres is something in our business that can facilite our duties in teaching. Experience in teaching English has been productive for me when using CALL and all stuff it offers. Not only because any use of this looks atractive by the eye more than that monocromatic sheets use for "Extra material" called "copies", but also students feel identify in the way material is presented. It's important to recognize the way CALL is introduce not as a simple tool, eventhough it seen like that for many teachers, but as reinforcement of the role of the teacher: Facilitator of leaning a new langauge. Also, CALL offers an useful guide to help teachers to include all the multiple intelligences that could be mixed in a classroom. How would I Use CALL in my classes? Simple, taking desicions to help my students' learning proces and it helps them to"construct their own knowledge and gain skills that will be needed in a future environment" (Learning and Instruction, p.6)
I completely agree with what is described in this video. In my own experience, the company where I work sells a package called TEAM (Total English Active Method). This package contains a CD-ROM with interactive activities, such as listen & repeat with real characters from a video series; click on a picture where a sentence appears, participants read it and if a word is mispronounced, the program highlights the word or phrase until the student pronounces it correctly, among many other activities. In the reading "Learning with Multimedia tools" the author points out that "Learners are engaged by the exciting technology, and they can explore information at their own pace and according to their own interests and needs."(p.308) Therefore, according to these quote and the video, the use of CALL increases motivation in the language learning process, and that is one advantage for TEAM students.
As a teacher of this specific English program, I would: - Before working on the CD-ROM, suggest each student to identify exercises in which they may find difficulties and look for extra practice on the web when finished.
- Get students in pairs to exchange difficulties found before, in order to have them propose and create exercises on power point or word.
