Word processor is a great tool teachers can use in the classroom to teach any topic as the reading Learning with Word Processor Tools says, “Studies have shown that the use of word processing by students increases their motivation to write and expands their vocabulary” (236). Most people have used word processor and it is not a big deal; therefore, it would be good to include technological tools in the classroom since students are interested in them and ease teacher´s work. Some examples of the possible uses teachers can give to word processor are to include pictures and clipart as the video explains because they are easy to use and students will remember a picture more than a simple word. Besides, teachers can include audios and practices to reinforce the topic and make sure students understand it, in this way the class will be more interactive.
Images always catch students' attention and teachers must learn to use tools as word but, in a creative way. To create web pages using word is simple because teachers do not necessarily need to learn a code to create the web page. In addition, according to the reading Web Pages in service of L2 Learning "...many language teachers resist investing in technology for the curriculum for a variety of reasons, including personal teaching philosophies, time honored beliefs and additional time burdens" (page 25) So, there are simple ways to create tools using different programs also teachers must encourage students to use technology and to become intelligent users. I would use Word as web page to assign homework in these way teachers and students could be in touch and students could receive their feedback at home. Besides, I would encourage students to create their pages and add images related to the topic they are studying at that moment.
Nowadays the boom of internet has achieved all generations specially children and teens. So, children and teenagers are caught by the idea to learn through a computer. As a result, teacher might take numerous advantages of this like by technology. Word processing offers teachers a variety of tools to present information in an order and innovate way.
-I will use this to present to students new vocabulary and pictures. In this way students will understand the vocabulary easily. -I will use to make students independent. Students are not depending on teachers instruction because they can go to the created material and to look the information they need to review.
Reading: Learning with word processor tools. Word processor is a useful tool that we as teachers are going to use while teaching. Word processor allows us to create documents for teaching (lesson plans, handouts and so on) and even letters that are going to be necessary for different purposes. In the same way, we can use this program to display a document to our students in order to teach a certain topic. It is very interesting how word can be appealing to students senses if teachers make the documents in an attractive way. Making the document attractive involves implementing images in it. “It’s not only what you say and how you say it, but also how it looks on the page. Word processing has placed at our disposal the ability to affect the appearance of the printed word easily yet markedly. ….”a picture is worth a thousand words…””(224) As English teachers we can make students make a Pictionary in word with the images and definitions of each element (for example: animals). Students create their Pictionary in word with hyperlinks in order to show their document to the rest of the class.
Using images has always been of great help for teaching, especially in a curriculum in which English teachers are not allowed to translate to students’ native language. In my teaching practice I learned that sometimes body language or explanations don’t work as well as pictures that represent vocabulary. Students liked to look at the pictures and work with them. They were more engaged in the topic. Not every picture is useful though; sometimes what teachers need is a part of it or the picture but in different colors. Editing a picture can become something complicated for some people, but when using word processing it is actually very simple. This editing is not limited to images, but to texts as well. ‘Many editing features are invoked through pulldown menus and most have keyboard shortcuts or double-key presses so that the program can distinguish a command from a text entry’ (Learning with Word Processor Tools, p. 221). Then, word processing facilitates its usage since it has commands for many purposes. As a teacher, I will use word processing to create games in which pictures are part of it. Hyperlinks will show the answer. Another way of using word processing is by printing many pictures with different layouts that will make them more attractive to students. Word processing has functions that make materials and texts catching and interesting. Colors either in pictures, smart arts, word arts, or tables make the materials to look different. Besides, word processing helps teachers to organize the content in different ways. That is why word processing is a good tool for education.
As teachers we have always observed that catching students' attention is a great deal; nowadays they tend to have many things to look at but at us presenting a topic, specially if it is based on pieces of paper with a lot of large, boring paragraphs. We should take also a look at what they are looking at, and we will surely find out that they look at their cellphones, ipods, etc., and also start talking a lot with their friends. This is mainly because they seem to seek for interaction, interesting and appealing things and messages. In this case, thanks to technology, we have the chance to provide them quite attractive lessons. With tools like Microsoft Word, which can be viewed as a web page, we can give our pupils nice exercises, and even theory that could appear innovative. According to Dan Gookin (1999), in chapter 32 Creating a Web Page, we can even show our students that "the document is alive by animating the text" (342). This would work better in a digital way, but fortunately today computers are part of our homes mostly. Then, by animating the text and inserting pictures and animations we will catch the attention of almost any audience. For example, concerning teaching applications: - When we are about to present a topic, and we are waiting for some students to come to class, we may have on the screen, both in case of using a video beam or on the computers of a lab, a animation related to the presentation as a attention grabber. - When trying to explain some theory which might be complicated to them, we may include pictures so they could have the information in more channels, and they would be assimilating the information in an easier way; they would have a more real-life idea of the information through the image.
“Word” is an useful tool to teachers since it appeared. Nowadays, we have the opportunity to make the students appreciate the information paste in a document not only as something that they have to read but also as some thing enjoyable. Traditionally, professors use the word processor program to write about some topics, but for me this is the first time that “word” was presented as something appealing- interactive- as it could be. For that reason, I understood something base on the last project: a tool is as useful as the hands that wield it.
