Module 6 Lecture 1 Part C -- Production and Creativity in CALL

5 comments:

  1. CALL allows students to be active participants in the acquisition of their knowledge because they can focus on the way in which learning experience is more significant for them. Besides, teachers and students can create authentic materials as it is stated in the reading Wed Pages in Service of L2 Learning, “the FL profession needs no convincing with respect to importance of reading authentic materials in order to stimulate L2 development” (page, 56) So, the authentic material might be meaningful for each student because they are creating an item to learn the second language.

Example: 1) To identify the present progressive is a little bite difficult for students. So, I would use you tube in order to explain this topic. I would show students some videos and ask them about the actions they identify. Next, I would ask students to record several actions and then add text to each action. Thus, students relate the action with the verb using their experience and creativity.

    2) Students can create a power point in which they have to write verbs in simple present and present continuous. Then, they can use hyperlinks on each verb. The simple present verbs will show a picture and the verbs in present progressive will show a video. Thus, students are stating the difference among the tenses.

  2. CALL is a fundamental tool that all teachers have to include and use nowadays in their classes, so students can improve their English in different ways. As the author of the video explains: students will prefer to spend twenty hours in front of the computer than spend six hours reading a research paper. This clearly shows that professors have to be prepared about this topic and take advantage of it, as it is avowed in the reading Web Pages in Service of L2 Learning, “…, the rationale and motivation to incorporate technology into the language curriculum become quite clear: It is a medium that our students understand, pay attention to, and like to use” (page 25). So, if students like to use the variety of resources found on the net, such as: YouTube, Blogs, Wikis, and so on; why do not include these technological tools in the English curriculum, I think that would be great not only for the students but also to the teachers.
Regarding my experience as teacher, I work in a public institution where resources are limited and not all students have access to the technological resources (CALL) that are part of our daily life. But, sometimes I prepare Power Point Presentations regarding the topics we are studying and they really enjoy learning by this method because they like it. Also, sometimes I bring my computer and I show them YouTube videos related with the topic and they prefer to surf the net than get a handout and read it, even though it is about the same topic.
As a teacher, I will use CALL resources in different ways, 2 examples are:
    • Creating a blog and let students share their ideas, thoughts, feelings, comments, and so on about a specific topic. For example: when we are studying Holidays and Celebrations in English speaking countries, they can describe a celebration they found on the internet that called their attention, and then their classmates comment if they like it or not, and the reasons why they like it or not.
    • Also, uploading a podcast is one of my favorites, because they are improving their fluency, pronunciation, grammar structure by creating an audio about any topic they want. I will use this technique as an extra class work because they need time and a lot of effort to do a good job.

Throughout the first three videos, the spokeswoman underlines the importance of production and creativity in the acquisition of L2. In this sense, CALL allows second language students to use their imagination to solve many types of tasks. She also beliefs that kids love to use CALL, and technology in general, because they motivate them. For Spoisky (in Edbert ,J; Hansong, E. & Chao, Ch. p. 2) motivation is one of the variable that influence the acquisition of language. For me imagination, which is the use of creativity to solve everyday problems, is more important than knowledge (somebody said that before) because knowledge is limited; imagination and creativity is not.
The spokeswoman also suggests that teachers must provide opportunities for exploration and reflection, be open to questions and ideas, motivate autonomy, and be sensitive to recognize students’ effort. This means that CALL is just one of the tools that teachers use to assist and promote language learning, so it was not created to substitute teachers. Students need to work under the supervision of teachers, at least at the beginning. In this sense, Blake (p.44) suggests several procedures for teachers before starting a CALL lesson. Some of them are: identify an appropriate topic, find a brief web passage related to that topic, provide brainstorming activities, incorporate the resources available on the web, provide students with key words, etc. Therefore, the role of teachers is to guide students though the use of technology.
There are many ways teachers can complement their tutorial lessons using CALL. For example, and based on my own experience, kids love to make comments on Facebook, so I can think about English-leaning students making comments about a particular and real national issue, for example “La Platina”. They can use verbs like agree, disagree, think, believe, like, consider, differ, feel and so on to express themselves. Another use for CALL could be the analysis of a video, like for example an interview done to a famous singer or actor. Here, students would have the opportunity to use language in real context while expressing their thoughts through language.

  4. The video contains so much valuable information for teachers and students of a second language. Second language acquisition is with no doubt a process requiring potentially attractive and contributive programs with easy accessibility. Such is the case of CALL (Computer-assisted language learning), a program which introduces a variety of applications useful in the language teaching and learning process, empowering and stimulating students to be active participants of the process and not just "passive recipients" as it was mention in one of the videos. Education is now complemented with numerous opportunities and strategies that technological advances offer. Implementing new ideas and techniques to get students truly involved in the L2 acqusition process is most of the teachers nowadays duty, as it is to develop an enjoyable and suitable environment in which learners can be able to explore their creativity and acquire comunication and language skills. CALL is a prominent tool, which has been evolving through years according to the L2 teaching and learning necessities, introducing new concepts and focusing on students responses to different stimuli (Blake, 2008).The demand of technological material for educational purposes demonstrate that teachers obtain positive and favorable responses when applying activities related to the usage of audiovisual material and the employment of other tools such as the ineternet.

  5. Not only students learn from CALL, but also teachers discover that the reward of saving time doing this kind of activities by using CALL goes beyond students' "Thanks teacher, I liked it".This represents creativity on part of teacher but also motivation on part of students. And yes, We are students too, and it is almost impossible to read pages and pages of informations if we dont have visual stimulus that provides CALL for example. Also, We have to be realistics in the sense that our time as teachers is reduce because we spend time in things that should last less in our classes. However, Spending time by making our students participating in their own knowledge gives them enhance "an individual's personal productivity" (Learing with word Tools, p.228)
In my personal experience as teacher, let's say that there is much work to do when trying to focus on students' participation! However, I'll use CALL in this case to teach creativity as the girl in the video said and by giving examples in my own classes bringing meaningful material and giving students' their own time to produce by them selves. That's one part in which PPP could help us, by using pictures, audio, etc. We as teachers have been wasting time when thinking how to improve our class, something is left behing and CALL is here to incentivate us.
