When using a blog, there is an important source that has to be taken into account: videos. Videos are very helpful when trying to grab students’ attention, thus when teachers want to reinforce any topic studied in class, using a video is a wonderful alternative to do so. As seen in the video, embedding a YouTube video in your blog does not take much time, it is just a few steps to have any video you want uploaded in your blog. So, if it is that easy, we should implement this important tool in our blog. Besides, videos will help you to clarify students’ doubts as well as showing examples and relevant information for the students. Furthermore, as it is stated in the reading Weblogs, “…millions of kids are already blogging, so they certainly are enticed by the tool. But very few are using their sites as places of critical thinking, and reflection…” (page 44). This shows us that students really like to use blogs, but what we as teachers have to do is to guide them within the learning process of a foreign language, and a good way to do so is to implement the use of videos in our blogs. Students will love to practice and reinforce the topics studied in class by watching a video at their homes. As a teacher I have not used blogs in my classes, but in the future I will use it, a couple of examples of how I will use it are: • Publishing YouTube videos for the students to clarify doubts of the units studied in the classroom. Then, they have to write questions and comments about the video they just saw. • Also, students are asked to find videos in YouTube regarding the topics studied in class, then they have to choose the most convenient video and post it in the blog for the rest of the class and the teacher to see it and comment about it.
Embbeding a video in a lesson or course blog allows the teacher to make the blog more interactive since students can do exercises based on them. Besides, it gives students the chance to post their own videos which may make them feel more involved in the course. As it is said by the author of the reading Weblogs, "The true potential of blogs in schools comes when students and teachers use them as publishing tools." (p.43) Therefore, teachers have to be aware of this aspect in order to make a blog an active tool where students feel comfortable to participate. In addition, students can provide feedback to their classmates, which enhances collaborative learning. Most importantly, the teacher has to set up the rules of the use of a blog and have students make a commitment among themselves to assure their confidence when posting. I would like to use videos in my blog in the following ways: - Post a video with a short explanation and examples of a grammar structure. Then, I request students to post more examples to practice the structure. Finally, I assign each student a classmate to check his or her work, help with corrections when neccesary or write a compliment. - Using the Task Based Approach, students create videos related to a topic studied in class. Students are divided into groups and create videos for the schema activation, pre-task, task, language focus and practice (a video each group). The lesson will be all planned by them! Next, students post their videos and the whole class posts comments related to what they learned from the videos.
Videos make a blog a very interactive tool because students can work on different activities based on them. Besides, students can create their own videos and embed them in the blog to have their classmates’ opinions and enrich the class. As it is mentioned in the reading Weblogs, "The true potential of blogs in schools comes when students and teachers use them as publishing tools." (p.43). When using blogs, teachers have to be aware of this aspect in order to make the blog an active class instrument where students feel encouraged to participate. Most importantly, teachers must set up the rules of the blog use to assure students’ self- confidence and privacy. In this way, students will learn to respect each other’s work and provide subjective comments. I would like to use videos from my blog in the following ways: • Students watch a video related to the explanation and examples of a grammar structure. Next, they post more examples to practice what they just learned. They are also free to check their classmates’ work and do the necessary corrections or write a compliment. • Using Task Based Instruction, students are separated in groups to create/ post a video related to a specific topic to work on the schema activation, pre-task, task, language focus and practice. Next, students post what they learned during the lesson, what they liked the most and what they expect to be posted in the course blog for coming lessons.
The use of videos in a blog is a very special part of the "game" when blogging because they are multimedia resources for our students to listen ,watch and write about topics of their courses. Also videos are constantly changing, being updated or remade which implies updated information that can be exposedto the users in order to get the desired instruction. The teacher becomes an experimented researcher of the video library and the student has an active role in his own development and self-assessment.As cited in chapter 27, page 414 (Critical issues: Blended Learning)"... In addition to the encouragement to interct and express creativity in their work, students have time to reflect on their activities in an online environment."I would use different types of videos to illustrate topics that are being studied to provide real and contextualized information, in order to get students´attention to my educational blog.I cuold use some classical videos from the past as well as the modern ones so students can establish comparisons and apply vocabulary in context.
There is a great amount of videos uploaded to You Tube that can help students interiorizing topics in which the visual aid is indispensable. For example, topics such as holidays and celebrations from other cultures are very difficult to explain by just giving information about them, so showing a video in which a specific holiday and/or celebration is showed would give students a clearer idea of what the activity is all about. Also, some videos have a lot of interactive videos which work as flashcards of specific vocabulary, pictures, and repetition of the words.
Making animated videos can be funny and entertaining to students. Continuing with the idea of the retelling a fieldtrip, students can create their own animated video about it and post it on the blog in order to make their classmates look at it and comment it according to their reactions. “Blogging allows students and teachers to carry on group dialogues, reflect and comment on class assignments and happenings, answer questions and hold group discussions” (http://www.ibritt.com/resources/wp_blogs.htm). I think that the best way of learning is through real life situations and also we have t make students know clearly what is what we want them to do. "be very clear as to what your expectations are" (weblogs, 46)
While learning, people may have different ways of acquiring knowledge, but something true is the fact that people learn through images. That is why; videos take an important role on learning, due to it make students feel attracted to a specific topic while watching a video. Besides, through videos, the professor may have an idea of how students react to a specific topic and/or to technology, as it is expressed by Egbert, Hanson-smith and chao, “The computer combined with video and audio recording also presents interesting opportunities to collect data about students’ behavior with technology.” (p. 13) Youtube is a very well known website in which we can find almost any kind of video, videos that can help us give students a more graphic acquisition of a topic itself. Blogs are helpful in education; videos on blogs make them more appealing to students, and at the same time let students get involved on the different tasks. Videos may be used as evaluation activities followed by a set of questions or tasks that would show the knowledge of the students, and they can also be used while explaining a topic or as warm up, in which the professor may have a clue about how much students know about any topic.
Videos are an effective instrument to keep the students focused in a topic. If the video is funny or boring it does not care it will catch the attention of the students easier than the classic professor`s lecture. By the way, as the free online dictionary encyclopedia2.com explained the function of you tube stated “Videos are streamed to users from the YouTube site (www.youtube.com) or via blogs and other Web sites. YouTube provides code that can be embedded in any Web site page to view a specific video”; so as we could see the interaction between the web page and blogs is incredibly easy, the purpose of you tube providing the “share” link is not to make us pay for the service, the real purpose is to catch us to get into the habit of use the web page every day… We know nothing is really free, but is our responsibility to use our resources in an effective approach. “The computer combined with video and audio recording also presents interesting opportunities to collect data about students’ behavior with technology.” (p. 13); this phrase combined the approach and the purpose that I was writing about. Nevertheless, it is a fact that some students have not access to internet, so it is our responsibility to help them by bringing the video to class or providing them a place to watch it, such as the computers lab, or even use the video beam in class to present the video if there is one in the high school.
Nowadays, youtube hasbecame one of the mos important tools to gather information about any topic. The use of videos to catch students`attention is a good method teachers can usein the class. So, ti`s an advantage that web sites like you tube allow people to upload videos from your computer, canera or also other websites as go animate.
ExplampleS:
1. I will asks students to watch a particular video and to answer some questions.
2. depending on the topic I will ask Students to look for a video in order to enrich the class with extra information of a topic
You tube became into a social network in which people share their opinion , knowledge and skills through videos. In addition, videos are attractive for students in any grade because they are full of sounds, music and images. Teachers could use you tube videos to discover students ideas and skills. Besides that, you tube as social network allow people to become closer and to learn from other cultures. So, Students can be exposed to natives speakers throughout you tube and learn informal vocabulary and expressions. However, teachers must encourage students to use you tube for educational purposes and not just to have fun and teachers must relate the video to the topic, teachers cannot allow the video to be the most important part of the class.
Example:
1. I would use you tube videos in order to listen natives speakers of English in different parts of the world and how the way people speak is different depending on the country. After that, Students should do research about the influence of England and United States in those countries. So, students can determine where the influence comes from.
2. I would ask students to create movies in which they invent, the characters, plot, and dialogues related to the topic. This is a way in which they can use their creativity and personal experience to create a movie.
